OP Reflection

Hi all. Firstly, thank all our classmates for giving us some support and patience during our presentation and ask some challenging questions during the Q&A session. I would also like to thank my team members, Xiaoshi, Sylvester and Wyhow. It is a great experience to work with you guys.
I have watched through the video several times and tried to find the strengths and weakness of the presentation. I really think the video method is a good way for self-reflection because it allows me to see myself in the audience’s eyes. I have found many problems which I have not thought about before. Below is my reflection of my presentation.
Preparation
During our initial brain storming of the ways we could use in our presentation to make it more interesting, Xiaoshi come up with the idea of news broadcast to cover the problem finding and survey analysis parts. As these two topics are relatively boring,we think a news broadcast is a good way to grab the audience’s attention.
We originally planned to use Powerpoint for our presentation and I had come up with my old way of slides with many cute pictures. Thanks for Wyhow for introducing us the software Prezi, which has a brilliant interface. However, after I went through the presentation skills and slides guide Brad mentioned to us, I thought I had better changed the way of my presentation from “funny and cute” to “Professional”. Then I changed most of the pictures from clip art pictures to the more professional ones. At the same time, we decided to cut down the words on the slides to let the audience to pay more attention to our presentation itself.
I think the weakness is that we did not have enough rehearsals and we did not have ‘a full rehearsal’. During our rehearsals, we did not fully play like the real one; we still refered to our notes or slides sometimes. Thus during the real presentation, when there was suddenly nothing to refer to, we tended to get nervous and forgot the words.
Delivery
After watching the video of my presentation, I think there are several strengths and weakness. The news broadcast idea is quite creative and sounds interesting, the video and the special “StepUpNewsAsia” logo look quite natural and real.
One biggest weakness is the less of organization of the whole presentation. It appears a bit messy. We actually had discovered this point during our rehearsal, but we failed to find ways to improve it. I think this may due to the difficulty to find a natural transition to bring the news broadcast in.
I have also found some problems regarding to my own delivery. One is that I did not speak very fluently. As I wanted to practice my oral speaking skill, I did not write a script and memorize it. I did not want to turn the presentation to reciting. Although I practiced for several times, I still cannot made it very well during the presentation. I think I need to practice my English further. The other problem I found is that although I did not recite, it sometimes sounded like I was reciting. I did not speak with variations of tones and speeds to show some emphasis. I also found there was no pause between sentences which may make the audience tired and difficult to listen to.
Audiovisuals
We had two videos used in this presentation. I think the student interview one is quite good as all the students we interviewed looks quite natural. The way of the video is also the normal way of interviews in a news broadcast. The second interview with Wyhow, who plays as the professor is also done well. However, the problem is that it does not show professions because it is obviously a fake one by interviewing someone in the team. However, we still show our thanks to Wyhow because he acted quite well.
One of the biggest weakness or mistake we have made is the sound system. Although it was fine at last due to the help from the other group, it still leaves a bad first impression on our presentation. I think this is a lesson learned that we should pay attention to every detail.
The Prezi is quite a good software. However, as we choose to use the cell phone to control it, there are some problems. The cell phone went to standby mode after a short while when I was presenting. When I tried to click to change the slide, sometimes the first click only ‘wake’ the cell phone and I need to press a second time. This resulted to the unsmooth way during my presentation.
In conclusion, I think this presentation is good lesson. Although it had some problems, we still did not regret to try the new way of news broadcasting. I think we need to challenge ourselves to try something new and progress with making mistakes and reflection.

  1. Hi Guo Chen,

I like your team's unique way of presentation, very creative and impressive. The news broadcast idea was really great!

Your Prezi is very organised and pleasing to watch. The videos are also natural and interesting.

You have definitely improved tremendously from peer teaching to this OP. We all did!

For the problem with the cell phone thing, you could try a remote control instead. Very useful.:)

It is true that we need to pay attention to all the details. You guys could find out the sound problem if you had tested it before class.

On the whole, congratulations for an interesting OP!!

  2. Hi Guo Chen!

Allow me to reiterate what I had told you few days ago, MILLION TRUCKLOAD MASSIVE THANKS for saving the entire presentation. You were calm enough to elaborate your part on your own accord knowing that we did not start with the right foot. You delivered the benefits across brilliantly and I am so proud of you!

Come to think of it, this is my 2nd project with you! Not to mention those minor group discussions we have had, there is some kind of affinity between us. It was indeed wonderful working with you, especially when we had both our peer teaching and research project consecutively.

P.S. I still have that short video clip of yours in my iphone. Shall I upload it? *laughs!*

  3. Hi Guo Chen,

I just knew right from the start that you were someone of exceptional calibre. Your calmness has put you in a greater position than the rest and has proven your worthiness to be called as a extraordinary individual! :D

It has been an honor working with you. You really deserved a bow, a salute or any form of respect from me. I agree with Xiaoshi that you actually saved our team despite the shaky start to our presentation. YOU ARE SIMPLY THE BEST!!!

    Cheers,
    Sylvester

  4. Hi Guo Chen,

No more Mr Bean's pictures?!! Haha. It was a joy listenting to your presentation. I will always remember the smile you had on your face. Goes to show how much you really enjoyed presenting! Keep it up!

However, I felt that you could have injected more emotions in your speech. As you mentioned, varying your tone and placing emphasis on key points. This could have made your speech more engaging and in this context, persuasive as well.

    Cheerios,

  5. Hi Guo Chen,

I think your presentation is interesting and creative. I agree that using Preszi and News casting idea is a good way to capture the attention. I am quite reserved however that these ideas are exactly effective. Firstly, like what Brad said, it takes the attention away from the presenters when the slides are fancy. The take away from the slides will be more like it's really cool slides rather than the content of it.

Another thing about news casting is I think it's rather inappropriate in the context we are talking about which is rather formal. However, if the audience is the class of ES2007S then I think it's a great idea.

Other than that, your accent is a little strong make it a little hard to listen sometimes. The analysis of walk time and transportation times is good. Limitation is also addressed. However, your eye contact is not very good.

Overall, quite impressive. Keep it up.

    Cheers,
    Billet

  6. Thanks, Guo Chen, for this highly detailed reflection and for all the effort at building and delivering a good presentation. As I mentioned in my formal assessment, your OP had strengths and weaknesses, but overall I was impressed by your portion and the confidence you exuded. You made a very good effort this term at integrating criticism and suggestions into your follow up (written) drafts and (spoken) delivery. I applaud that open attitude and the learning that you have shown. Best of luck in your future presentations!

  7. Dear Guo Chen,

Please pardon my delay in commenting on your reflections. It has always been a pleasure to watch you present. Your smile and ability to exude the confidence in all situations allowed me to feel comfortable as an audience. What I took away from your presentation was that confidence was able to transcend language differences.

What impressed me though was your attention to details, speaking so confidently about about the statistics required to wow the audience and was able to think on your feet to give convincing answers during the Q and A. These strengths, I feel, will certainly bring you far in your interviews! All the best:)

  9. Hi, Xiaoshi and Sylvester

Thanks for your commends. I think you two exaggerate my contribution:) I think you did a very good job and it is a pleasure to have you in the team. Although there is some little mistakes during your part, however, your part is the most challenging part. You can think of the creative idea and willing to take the risk to try it. It is normal that we cannot meet the standard of a real news broadcast because they are the professionals. I really think you two deliver a very good presentation. Jiayou!
Ps: Sylvester, Your suit is so nice:)

  10. Hi Guo Chen,

Sorry for the late comments. Xiaoshi and Sylvester were right, you did save the presentation. Though your accent gave Billet some difficulty, I think this should not be a significant critique, as in university, we do meet people who come from countries where English is not the first language.

I wish you all the best in the future, and in your endeavour to improve your language skills!
